The molecular structure of PVP is formed by polymerization of vinylpyrrolidone monomer (n-vinylpyrrolidone). The vinylpyrrolidone molecule consists of a pyrrolidone ring and a vinyl group. In the polymerization process, the vinyl reacts with oxygen atoms on the pyrrolidone ring to form a polymerization chain. The molecular weight of PVP can be controlled by adjusting the amount of vinylpyrrolidone monomer and the polymerization conditions.

The three-dimensional structure of PVP is mainly determined by the conformation of the polymerization chain. Due to the limitation of the bond length and bond Angle between vinyl and the oxygen atom on the pyrrolidone ring, the PVP polymerized chain presents a curved conformation. This conformation makes PVP have high solubility and fluidity, can be dissolved in water and organic solvents, and is easy to form colloidal solutions.

PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) is a linear polymer formed by the polymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP). Its chemical formula is (C6H9NO)N. In the structure of PVP, there is a more polar amino group with a dipole moment of about 40, which makes PVP both hydrophilic and polar characteristics. In addition, the non-polar methylene and methylene groups in the rings and long chains of PVP molecules give it hydrophobicity. PVP usually appears as a gray powder-like substance, which is hydrophilic, easy to flow, and has a certain odor. It has a density of about 1.144g/cm³, a melting point of about 130°C, a boiling point of 217.6 °C, and is stable at room temperature and pressure. PVP shows good solubility and drying affinity in aqueous solution, so it has a wide range of applications in medicine, food, cosmetics and other fields.
