PVPP crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone introduction
CTFA name :Crosslinked Polyvinylpyrrolidone, white or nearly white in nature, with moisture absorption and easy to flow powder, odorless or slightly odorless, insoluble in water, alkali, acid and common organic solvents, with strong expansion performance and complex ability with many kinds of substances. It can be used as a stabilizer for beer, liquor, grape juice, fruit juice and other beverages to extend their storage life. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is mainly used as a disintegrating agent for tablets, and can also be used as a disintegrating agent and filler for pills, granules and hard capsules.
Chinese name: crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone
Foreign name: Crosslinked Polyvinylpyrrolidone
Properties: hygroscopic powder with easy flow
Application: Extend its storage life
Material property
White or nearly white, with hygroscopic easy to flow powder, odorless or slightly odorless, insoluble in water, alkali, acid and common organic solvents, with strong swelling performance and complex ability with many kinds of substances. Melting point :300℃.
Drug property
PVPP is supplied in white or slightly white powder, with a slight special smell, basically tasteless, insoluble in water and various organic solvents. The water absorption of PVPP increases with the increase of relative humidity. The formation of the gel inhibits the penetration of water into the pill and slows the disintegration of the pill. PVPP, in contrast to some other disintegrating agents, is insoluble and has no tendency to form gels at all. PVPP and a variety of organic and inorganic pharmaceutical excipients and active ingredients have very good compatibability, and solid drugs containing PVPP tablet disintegrators can be easily produced using common pill manufacturing techniques, including direct tablet pressing, spray, drying and wet granulation.
Compressibility and adhesion
PVPP has excellent fluidity and plastic deformation, so they have excellent bonding properties. This property gives good compressibility in spray, dry, and wet granulation. When PVPP tablet disintegrators are added to tablets, compared with commonly used starch, cellulose preparations and pectin compounds, the hardness and wear resistance of tablets are not affected, and the cap length of tablets is not reduced. PVPP can also be used effectively as a tablet disintegrator in direct compression tablets without the need for lubricants or adhesives.
Capillary activity and hydration capacity
Studies have shown that PVPPS as tablet disintegrators have high capillary activity and hydration capacity due to their large specific surface area (average 1.25 m/g) and significant water absorption (high and rapid water absorption, up to more than 60%).
Swelling and disintegration
PVPP has high capillary activity, so it can quickly absorb water into the tablet. Because the internal pressure (swelling pressure) exceeds the strength of the tablet, the tablet dissolves in an instant. And because there are folded molecular chains between the crosslinks, when water or aqueous solutions penetrate, they are stretched by the sudden impact and forced to separate immediately. The expansion results in an increase in net volume (approximately twofold in 5 minutes), resulting in the immediate disintegration of tablets formulated with PVPP tablet disintegrators.
